Beschreibungen

The book "Alexandria Why" monitors Youssef Chahine's cinema's penetration of social and artistic taboos. The book, by journalist and art critic Issam Zakaria, also deals with many stories about Youssef Chahine's biography. It deals with the story of Yehia Shukri Murad, a teenager who loves acting and who voiced Youssef Chahine in The period of his youth, where he tries to prove himself and thinks about traveling to America to study acting despite his family's difficult circumstances, and from his story many stories branch out throughout Alexandria.
Zakaria not only narrates the biography of Youssef Shaheen, but he also narrates about the way of life in Alexandria during the period of World War II. He also narrates a love story between an Egyptian young man named Ibrahim and a Jewish girl named Sarah, and with this story he conveys to us the nature of social life in Alexandria. He also touched on politics through the story of a group of young men who wanted to get rid of the English occupation. He also touched on the emergence of Jewish gangs, and how Yahya lost his friend because he joined those gangs.
From the cover of the book, we read: "Not only because Youssef Chahine is the most famous and important Arab film director, or because the film "Alexandria... Why?" is the first Egyptian film to win a major award from one of the three major festivals, "Cannes" and "Berlin" and "Venice" but for many other reasons. "Alexandria... Why?" is Youssef Chahine's most complex and innovative film in terms of scenario: a mixture of biography and historical fiction, surrealist fiction and documentary realism mixed with melodrama and spectacle, more than fifty characters whose destinies are intertwined and whose paths intersect in public and private dramatic threads. It is the closest Arabic work formulated in the manner of a symphony, which consists of a tight but multi-layered structure and parallel melodies played by dozens of instruments, but in harmony and harmony.
